On Friday morning we went to the Local Ocean Trust: Turtle Sanctuary, Watamu.
We were shown round and given information on how precious the turtles are and how their lives are being endangered by us humans - poached for their meat and hotels destroying nest areas.
They release an average of 5 turtles a day and they even had one in the rehab centre which we were able to get up close and personal with.
Bootstrap came to the sanctuary in 2008 with only one front flipper (shark thought to have taken the other one) and a buoyancy problem preventing her from diving down. The guide would place his hand on the top of her shell, push her down to the bottom of the pool and when he let go she would simply bob back up to the surface.
It is also possible to get work experience from the Sanctuary. Beautiful accommodation is provided for, 4 en suite rooms, a social area and its own little pool. Could be the perfect place for people just finishing school and wanting to get some experience/holiday....?
